Social Psychology defines ‘Altruism‘ as the unselfish concern for other people—doing things simply out of a desire to help, not because you feel obligated to some duty. It involves acting out of concern for the well-being of others. It is one aspect of Prosocial Behaviour.
In fact, Neurobiologists have found that when a person behaves altruistically, the pleasure centers of their brain become more active. It is like candy for the brain, a sort of positive reinforcement.
But, why are we discussing this?
Approx. 2 years back I had a conversation with a friend which is still engraved in my mind and I do ponder over it from time to time.
The context of the conversation was that “we all – you and me – are non-significant actors of this world. Our functions or actions barely make a dent, especially in global scenarios. That we are mere mortal beings that will pass time on this planet and world affairs will barely affect with our existence or non-existence”.
Obviously, my counters included that every action has some effect, even if its the tiniest, they do carry impact. He very confidently asked me, “in 26 years of your existence, how many actions made by you have had an impact?”
I barely had an answer for this. But for argument’s sake, I did say that maybe you should ask me this on my death bed. I will have an answer for you!
The logic behind that answer was, first, I have too much left to do or accomplish. Second, I am a kind, caring person who will always strive to make an effort by passing that kindness to others in the community. And finally, as a woman, I will make sure that future generations that follow me are generous and helpful in their actions.
I know, it’s a very idealistic and utilitarian belief. I mean ya I get it, that this will not achieve any world peace or anything before I cease to exist. But, after two years I still strongly believe in this more than ever. Do you know why? Because in the last 2 years this ideal was reinforced, and let me share how:
- When the second wave of covid hit India in 2021, we saw the best way humanity came together, to save lives (to the best of their abilities) and with limited resources. People forgoing their religious beliefs, castes, and political ideologies, that are so central to Indian culture.
- Present Ukraine vs Russia crisis. The openness and willingness by citizens of Poland or Romania, to provide selflessly with shelters and essentials to all nationalities (even with all the political involvement), is another example of humanity prevailing.
These are just small examples of humanity exceeding expectations, and when you investigate deeply you will find many more throughout history if you’d try.
It is easier to accept that our actions don’t matter but every kind effort you make in turn affects your community positively, or at least impacts at least one individual’s life (with whom you shared your generosity) and creates some influence. These small attempts make a ripple effect of positive change.
So this post is to remind you how compassion and empathy have an impact on the world. To appreciate every individual trying their best to give forward as well as engaging in Altruistic behavior, either directly or indirectly.
